Sexual sounds, from erotic stories to sex podcasts

A look into how the spoken word has expanded our sexual horizons via erotic stories, sex podcasts, ASMR and more.

Ever heard of phone sex chatlines? Back in pre-digital days, they allowed anyone to share their erotic fantasies to operators whose tantalising voices further fed their fantasies and stimulate their imagination. How did we evolve from this to the sexy stories that have been so popular over the past few years?

This is the era of erotic sounds, sensual whispering and audio porn. A new frontier for sexual exploration that takes us right back to the phone sex-crazy Eighties.

Audio erotica, then and now

Before technology happened, sexy chatlines tapped into our craving for sensual words and spoken fantasies.

While erotic sounds are now part of our daily lives, what made chatlines unique was the fact they were all about interaction, allowing us to talk to real people and have them speak back to us. While podcasts offer less room for interaction, both have something in common to help foster our fantasies and let our imagination run wild: anonymity. You just never know what the person looks like and are therefore free to put any voice to the face.

Stimulating our hearing rather than our sight allows to enter a different realm of intimacy and tap into our inner erotic selves, as explained by Jesse Kahn, head of the Gender & Sexuality Therapy Center in NYC.

ASMR porn, or the art of erotic whispering

In our highly individualistic age, retreating from the outside world and spending time with ourselves has become an increasingly frequent occurrence. As such, putting our headphones on and listening to titillating sounds feels natural and safe.

Audio erotica is having a moment. Beyond arousal, this is about stimulating our senses and minds. There is something out there for every taste and need. Amongst the most popular formats, ASMR has changed the way we think about whispering.

ASMR stands for autonomous sensory meridian response; it is most commonly triggered by specific auditory or visual stimuli. What it does is produce a tingling sensation that usually begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. Listening to ASMR audios with earphones can maximise the experience and cause something of a “brain orgasm”. Researchers confirm they also result in lower heart rates and help maximise relaxation as well as arousal. Noted director Erika Lust has ventured into ASMR erotica to add a further dimension to visual experiences.

What to listen to and how?

Audio might very well be the new porn, and there are many ways to explore it. Some voices tell stories, others soothe or offer guidance… That makes them a great support to masturbation.

Beyond tapping into the erotic potential of the spoken word, they can provide suggestions and ideas to take us outside our usual realm and make our self-pleasure sessions truly memorable

Speaking of which, we are currently working on an exciting venture with a brilliant partner. Excited to know more? Stay tuned!!
